How To Build A Linear Actuator:
The first link is parts and pieces one would need to build an actuator and step-by-step instructions on how to build one, along with a whole 3D printer. The second like is a more simplified actuator, more like what we needed. The main idea is you take a stepper motor, smooth rods, linear and skater bearings, two flat mounting pieces, and a drive belt. You take the smooth rods and place the parallel to each other, put the linear bearings on the rods, and mount the rods down. Take the stepper motor and mount that down so that the driving rod is halfway between the two rods, mount the skater bearing vertically, opposite the driving rod. Mount a flat piece on the linear bearings and hook the drive belt to the stepper motor. Slide the drive belt around the skate bearing and connect both ends of the belt to the mount on the linear bearings. Once the stepper motor is on on moving, the mount on the bearings should run smoothly.
